Thomas R. Metcalf was born on May 31, 1934 in New York. He was educated at Amherst College, Cambridge University and Harvard
University. He has spent most of his teaching career at U.C. Berkeley, where he joined the History Department faculty in 1962.
His main academic focus has been the history of the British Empire, particularly India in the 19th Century.
